Why I Use Aluminum Foil in My Abstract Photographs

Why I Use Aluminum Foil in My Abstract Photographs - Guy Farmer Photography

I use aluminum foil in my abstract photographs because I love the way it reflects light and creates fascinating shapes and shadows. I’ve always preferred art that takes me on a journey of discovery no matter how many times I look at it, and aluminum foil does that for me.

I like the humility of aluminum foil and how a simple material can transform through photography into something much bigger and bolder and somehow also nuanced. The shapes it creates suggest things both industrial, natural, and ephemeral. I like the juxtaposition of hardness and softness foil provides.

Each time I set up a photo with a different piece of foil, new possibilities unfold. There’s no end to the amazing outlines and contours it can create. I feel something different every time I look at my works and they encourage me to examine who I am and my place in the universe.
